LecTec
Secures Two Additional Patents On Cotinine,
A Potential Therapy For Smoking Cessation And Psychiatric
Disorders
June 30, 1999 --
Minnetonka, MN - LecTec Corporation (Nasdaq National Market:
LECT), announced today that it has received two new U.S.
patents on cotinine. Cotinine is a non-nicotine,
non-addictive compound, and it is the primary metabolite of
nicotine. LecTec Corporation has six existing U.S. patents
which cover the use of cotinine for smoking cessation and
weight management. The first new patent describes a
therapeutic method to treat psychiatric disorders such as
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette's Syndrome and
various addictive conditions. The second new patent gives
additional patent coverage for cotinine's potential utility
as a smoking cessation therapy.
"The issuance of
these two new patents coincides with new preliminary
evidence suggesting that our cotinine pill may reduce the
withdrawal symptoms associated with tobacco cessation. In
addition to relieving tobacco withdrawal symptoms, cotinine
may also have beneficial effects on symptoms associated with
some psychiatric disorders," Rodney A. Young, CEO and
President commented.
"The potential
benefits of cotinine as an aid in smoking cessation, weight
management, and now psychiatric disorders, increase our
optimism about the full potential of cotinine. We are
seeking co-development/marketing partners to take cotinine
through its next phase of clinical development. To
accomplish this, we have prepared a well-defined clinical
development plan and execution strategy," concluded Young.
LecTec is a health
care and consumer products company that develops,
